As the kiddos and I loaded up into our Mini Van yesterday morning heading out to our wonderful MOPS group Justin said to me "I don't think you will be able to park at the top of the driveway when it snows." It had snowed about 6 inches the night before. I said ok and away out to the car we went. Justin being such a lovely husband started and warmed the car for us as I ran around like crazy to get the kids and I packed up for a 2 hour outing. (side note... I dont know why it is so hard to pack everything up... all I need are diapers, wipes, nursing cover, food for Jonah and snacks and a drink for Julia... ugh what I need to do is pack it all up the night before)! Anyway, back to the story. So I take the E brake off and step on the gas to reverse out into the street but no.... my Honda Odyssey has a mind of its own. It sides down the driveway instead the wheels are not moving just sliding... I see my fate ahead the garage door which is down because our van is too big to fit in there... and think oh boy we are so going to crash into that. I keep the wheel straight and pump the brake thankfully we stop 2 feet from the door. I know that there is no way this massive piece of steel is going to let me back it out of our driveway... we are stuck! Also another side note... I remembered that the gas tank was near E the night before. As I am sitting in the driveway I call Justin who is inside and say we are suck and cant get out... his response "I just poured milk in my cereal." Me thinking "are you serious get out here!" As I wait I hang my head low thinking bummer we are not going to make it to MOPS. So I shut off the car to head inside with the kids only to find that we cant get out... the van is pinned in the driveway as our wall is too close to open the doors (another problem I have with our driveway). So I go to turn the car back on only to find that we have run out of gas! The little amount of gas I had left has run to the front of tank not helping me at all. So Justin has to take the gas can down to the over priced BP to get gas. This is of course after he finishes his cereal. Mean while all the local moms are stopping and talking to me on their way to preschool. Was I embarrassed? Yes! Justin finally returns with gas and fills it up. Jonah is playing with his bink in his car seat and Julia does not understand why Elmo's World has stopped playing and is asking to go to MOPS Group and eating her cereal in a cup. Justin then takes two of the rocks from the wall and places them under the front tires... then takes two pieces of wood and places those under the tires for me to "ride up on." This is a HAZARD! DO NOT try this at home! Justin gives me the thumbs up and tells me to put the beast into reverse. Now I know being a New Englander and learning lessons over time that steady gas pressure but not to much is what gets you moving out of snow. So I slowly step on the gas. At that moment we experience our own Griswold Family Christmas! Instead of drain pipe icicle flying into our neighbors house... the two rocks from the wall go flying to the back of the now opened garage door, and the two pieces of wood also go shooting into the garage! Justin and I just look at each other with wide eyes as he was standing in the front of the van pushing upwards. At this point he puts down some ice melt and that does the trick and the van is free. We are lucky and thankful that the Lord watched over him as he easily could have lost a leg or more! Lessons learned... The Honda is going to STINK in the snow... I am ready to trade it in for some 4 wheel drive, never use planks of wood again... dont park at the top of the driveway in snow, and a lesson my mother taught me was always keep at least a half of tank of gas in the car in the winter! We did make it to MOPS which was refreshing once we got there!
